Using AI in academic research
working
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has taken over several creative as well as mechanical jobs. In the world of academia, many AI tools have emerged to simplify research and analysis. In this module we explain and guide you on how to use AI tools for preparing a Literature Review. The following tools are explored:
- ChatGPT
- Research Rabbit
- Open Read
- Elicit
This module also deals with the issues of plagiarism and ethical responsibilities. The purpose of this module is to automate the process of finding relevant papers, summarising them, and finding research gaps. Participants will learn how to use ChatGPT for summarizing and analyzing literature, harness ResearchRabbit for discovering and tracking research papers, utilize Elicit for systematic reviews, and explore Open Read for comprehensive literature exploration. Through detailed articles and step-by-step tutorials, the module aims to improve research efficiency, accuracy, and comprehensiveness. Case studies and examples are presented.

How are artificial intelligence tools transforming academic research?
This is a how-to article so use simple terminology and avoid complex jargon. References are encouraged (where neccessary). While writing this article keep in mind that we are considering all the streams of education research, not just management/ education/ economics/ arts/ mathematics/ sciences.
Follow this structure but can be modified:
- What is the purpose of AI in academic research? What challenges in academic research are they addressing?
- efficiency
- accuracy
- collaboration
- simplification
- Examples of tools and explanation of how they are used in different streams
- Outcomes- how is AI changing academic research?
- What will the future look like- a 5 and 10 year scenario
- Concerns of AI usage in academic research
Keep the article practical and easy to read.
How to use ChatGPT for writing a Literature Review
Do not write definitions, theory, etc. This is a practical and how-to guide. That means it has to be written like we have written Mendeley article. References are not compulsary except wherever you are giving examples which contain summarisation of an academic article.
In this article we have to explain how to use ChatGPT in academic research, i.e. for writing Literature Review.
Note the following points:
- Use examples to explain the points. Save the papers you are using. It is better if you can use examples for whom we have pdfs available on the web itself, rather than downloading a pdf. That way you can simply enter the hyperlinks. For example T&F/ Elsevier/ ResearchGate articles which are freely available on their website.
- Use examples from different streams but avoid core sciences/ maths etc in which we do not specialise.
- Include screenshots wherever you are giving how-to guide. For example "where to enter a prompt on ChatGPT"
- Give the exact prompts while giving examples.
Follow the below structure to write this article.
- Purpose of ChatGPT in literature review
- understanding a concept
- understand the context of a concept (history/ evolution/ background)
- empirical review of a particular paper using GPT4.0 (where you can upload a paper and ask ChatGPT to summarise what it says)
- Prompts to create an empirical review on ChatGPT
- Initial formalities for using this tool (like account creation, etc)
- step by step process
- examples (at least 2) with prompts
- rules to enter the correct prompts as per your desired result
- Prompts to understand a concept and context on ChatGPT for literature review
- step by step process
- examples (use the same topics as above) with prompts
- rules to enter the correct prompts as per your desired result
- Limitations of ChatGPT for Literature Reviews
- Incorrect references
- Outdated references
- Cannot find research gap
- Lack of depth
- Others which you can think of
How to use Research Rabbit in academic research

- Include screenshots wherever you are giving how-to guide. For example "how to connect a paper from Research Rabbit to Zotero"
- Give the exact process while giving examples.

- Connecting papers from Research Rabbit to Zotero
- step by step process
- Importing the citation on word document (with screenshots/ small videos) & creating the bibliography
- Using papers from Research Rabbit in ChatGPT
- Step-by-step process of uploading a paper from Research Rabbit to ChatGPT
- What is the exact prompt to enter in ChatGPT for empirical review (step by step process with screenshots)
- Alternative prompts (tips for more prompts as per desired result, for example the fields/points of summarisation)
- Limitations of Research Rabbit for Literature Reviews
- Cannot summarise the paper
- Sometimes full paper not available
- Cannot use certain filters like geographical location (not sure if this is correct)
- anything else you can think of

- Access (some apps are not free)
- Data privacy
Explain the problem with examples.
Then explain how to address this problem.
For example in the point about 'plagiarism' explain how plagiarism can be avoided by rephrasing, and how to use ScribbrAI for checking %
