Technological advancements, diffusion of technology among the population, competitive pressures, and evolving consumer behaviours and attitudes have disrupted the food retail business.  There has been a shift from the conventional business module that impacts all stakeholders in the industry. Some of the ill impacts of virtualization have been identified to comprise businesses facing losses leading to economic imbalances and job cuts. As Dubai is also going through a rapid transformation based on the adoption of technologies amidst the pandemic of COVID19, this study attempts to investigate food retailers ‘condition during and post the pandemic. It also aims to understand the extent of digital disruption in the retail industry and the problem with stakeholders in the transition to virtualization and to sustain the market.

The current study is significant in understanding the overall impact of digital transformation and organizations' perspectives on dealing with it. We will survey customers and supervisors of food retail stores across Dubai. We intend to find out the extent of digitalisation adopted by these stores and the impact it has had on customers' shopping experience. Based on the results, recommendations will be made to allow firms to navigate through digital disruption successfully and attain business success.

Goal 1

Identify the factors influencing Dubai retail stores’ decision to adopt digitalization

Purpose: Dubai’s retail industry has undergone a significant transformation after the Covid-19 pandemic. Many stores went online but some also resisted the change. This has affected not only their operations but also customers’ experience with the stores. This goal will aim to find out theoretically the factors that influence retail stores’ decision to adopt/ not adopt digitalization. It will also identify the various impacts of digitalization on the stores.

Methodology: A mix of literature review and systematic review will be used. At the end the conceptual framework will be drawn.

Assess the challenges and impact of digitalisation in food retail businesses in Dubai

Purpose: Consumers respond differently to digital shopping of food items because of different perceptions, preferences, infrastructure and information availability, and prior experience with online shopping. The purpose of this goal is to survey Dubai’s retail store consumers to find out how they have responded to digitalization. On the other hand, these retail stores’ owners will be interviewed to find out the challenges and impacts of digitalization on their business.

Methodology: Survey will be analysed using correlation and regression testing on SPSS software. Interviews will be analysed thematically.
